SE - Day 8 - Kelvin to Picketpost

From AZ Travel

We camped in moonlight and saguaros on the Arizona Trail near Kelvin, hoping to take a ride on that trail in the late morning. Woke and found ourselves in a lovely wash. Nice morning light on the surrounding mountains. A few tiny spring flowers starting to show. Overhead, horsetail clouds signaled a change in the weather.

A quick change in the weather. Before we had prepared a late breakfast, the wind was blowing and the sky to the west had grown dark. Rain hit hard. We weren't riding. We were driving the backroad toward Florence, AZ, enjoying the scenery from inside the truck.

Parts of downtown were rotting away, so we took photos. Then headed north and east and found a camp on the mountainside above the Picketpost trailhead -- another section of the Arizona Trail.

The rain had stopped, but the clouds were heavy and threatening. As we hiked up the ridge, the sun came out for a last shout before sunset. Beautiful surroundings. Picketpost mountain glowed in the golden sun. Light angled across the peaks and towers of the Superstition Mountains to the north. A sense of lushness to the greening desert plants around us.

Both Trina and Sprocket got cactus in their lips. Cool and punk!

Our camp was remote. We'd had to take the bikes off the rack and Trina had to bust some moves in 4WD to get us there. Still, we were too close to someone with a very loud sound system and very little taste in music. The rain on the tent and memories of the evening light drowned out some of it.
